Oil Painting Supplies

These are the starter supplies for our beginning oil painting classes. These supplies have been chosen for their economic value and their environmental friendliness. You may choose to bring your own supplies if you have them.
Other supplies to bring include: small jar with lid to keep your walnut oil cleaning solution in, a piece of glass or plexiglass for a palette, some rags, and a roll of paper towel. Download this list in PDF format.

Blick Academic Canvas

Blick Academic Canvas

These canvases are a good quality, economical option for students. The 5/8" thick stretcher bars are made of solid pawlonia wood, a light and sturdy softwood from north Asian forests that resists warping. Sold in packs of two. Dick Blick created its Academic, Studio, and Premier prestretched canvases to give artists a range of choices. Good, Better, Best! Academic is the most economical choice. Compare the front and back photos of each canvas. Note the attachment of the canvas and the thickness of stretchers. Academic canvas is side stapled, an economical choice for student work, but one that limits future options for restretching, conservation, and framing.

M. Graham Oils

M. Graham Oils

Artist and master paintmaker Art Graham put years of experience at other companies behind him and started his own business based on his own vision and values. The result is a paint, manufactured without fillers or additives, that goes back to some of oil painting's finest traditions. Graham creates fine artist oils in small batches, using his knowledge to bring out the finest color from each pigment! Each color is rich and saturated, with the highest possible mass tone and tinting strength. Most colors are based on a single pigment. Art Graham took his new colors back to the roots of oil painting in Italy and Flanders by using walnut oil as a binder. Walnut oil has been used interchangeably with linseed oil for over a thousand years. It flows more freely, and has less tendency to crack or yellow. Today it is known that Renaissance masters such as Da Vinci and Dürer generally favored walnut oil over linseed oil.

For our classes, start with:
Naphthol Red
Azo Yellow
Ultramarine Blue
Titanium White
Burnt Sienna

Optional colors:
Alizarin Crimson
Permanent Green
Sap Green
Yellow Ochre
Raw Umber

M. Graham Walnut Alkyd Medium

This special medium was developed to provide a non-toxic, environmentally responsible alternative to solvent based, rapid drying alkyd mediums. It closely resembles combinations of sun-thickened oil and natural resins used throughout the history of art, but with the advantage of being solvent-free.
Note: This is what you will mix with your paint to help it dry quicker, give it a shine, and make your paint last longer.
